Greenling's Mission
Working Towards a Sustainable Future
What is sustainability, anyways?
Well, like anything, there's different levels. Community sustainability and societal sustainability are two of the most referenced. Community sustainability is talking about your town and your neighbors. The goal of community sustainability is to establish local systems that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible. Societal sustainability is based on the same principles, just a much larger scale.
Greenling.com would rather see small changes in everyone than lifestyle overhauls in just a few people. We believe it is OK if you don't live in complete harmony with the environment and sustainable practices. Sometimes we aren't left with many choices. We do believe, however, that everyone can contribute something and that we should all be working towards a sustainable future and not against it.
Greenling.com is trying to find a balance between economic progress and the combined health of you and the environment. Many breakthroughs that have significantly improved our lives have come at the expense of people or the environment. There are many people trying to ensure that while we continue down the incredible path we have blazed in history we are not making unnecessary sacrifices in our health and environment. Evidence is mounting that, as our population grows, changes need to be made if we want to maintain our standard of living. Some of these changes are obvious, some are not.
The good news is that many of these changes don't mean sacrificing our way of life. As we gain more knowledge on natural and complex systems it is becoming not only possible but sometimes easy to work with these systems. We are also learning that some assumptions we made about these systems in the past, what we base many conventional products and methods on, are misguided.
Take plants, for example. We used to think that Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium were all a plant really needed to grow. We based an entire industry (fertilizers) off this assumption. We now know this to be false. We are recognizing the amazingly complex systems working inside and underneath plants. We are also recognizing that advances in industries based on false assumptions can damage the very things they were created to help.
It is generally a safe assumption that organic products do not harm the environment, though the harvesting of some can be detrimental. There is no practical way to eliminate all risks/dangers from some products and our goal is just to offer products that get you a little closer to sustainability.
It is not a safe assumption that local food is best. Local food laden with chemicals and pesticides is just as harmful as imported food of the same type. Did you know that conventional peaches are some of the most polluted fruits we can eat? But they seem so fresh and flavorful, don't they?
Greenling's Gold Standard is Local AND Organic. That's what you should strive to eat and that's what we strive to provide for you.
